«. TROUBLESOME OH-VRGE. Lionel Terry presents a difficult problem to both the Mental Hospita and the Lyttelton Gaol authorities : (says the "Press" of November 17th). It is only a month or two since he attempted to burn down the '. Lyttelton Gaol, in which he has been confined for the past year or , two. He made aaother effort to fire the building by borring a ! hole in j the ceiling of § the lower storey of the building and attempting to burn the records and papers stored in the ' upper storey, but this scheme was • also nipped in the bud. Many of ' his privilege? were then taken awny '• from him, and be was confined to • a cell instead ofj|being allowed to live l in the hospital building. Since then I ,he has occasioned the Chief Gaoler j and his assistants considerable anx- ' iety. It has been necessary to have 1 a warder with Terry day and night, ' to keep a strict watch over hiinand c prevent him from- doing further c miscbief. This has necessitated two c warders taking alternate day and n night watcbe's. In the dead of night s 'I'p.rry. often commences to shout and * call opt at the top of his voice, and c ..he frequently addresses the warders '* in insultiDg- terms. Duriog the past J "few weeks Terry has refused to take * his food, and this extraordinary con- r duct has been a fresh source of anx- v iety to the gaol authorities. It has "been' found necessary to resort to ( "tube feeding" to prevent him from i starving himself, and this method s of feeding has had to be carried out t by the Mental Hospital doctors, Drs f Gow and Jeffries, who take it in t turn to make daily visits to the i g.aol for the purpose of feeding g Terry.
