NEWS OF THE DAY.
— <»— _ — If Sir Joseph Ward kept tho portfolio of Public Works for say, Mr Massey, he would bn acting in tho best interests of New Zealand ; and Mr Massey, if he accepted it, would do far more good for New Zealaud , by steadying the State ship, which is veering ,amongst Labour and Socialistic rocks, than lie could accomplish by heading a political party who are not in touch with public opinion,- and arc very unlikely to ever command a majority in the House. We are, perhaps, the first to suggest Mr Masse_y as a successor to tho Hon Hall-Jones ; but we do so because it would be the best appointment that ' could be made and would do much to restore public confidence in the future of the Domion.—Wairarapa Times. A Wellington correspondent reports that tlic political campaign is still uninteresting. Mr P. M. B. Fisher had a packed meeting of about two thousand five hundred people in the Town Hall. A good portion of his address was devoted to a mild attack on the "Evening Post." Mr Fisher is making headway in his campaign against the Hon T. Hislop, aiid sporting men would say the odds are about even. For Wellington East the tip is Mr McLean, but the poll for Mr McLaren (Labour) will most likely surprise most people. Messrs Luke and Fitzgerald (both followers of the Government) seem to be making the running for Wellington suburbs. Mr Herdman is putting up a good fight for Wellington North and should -be. -in at the second ballot, but Mr Izard's supporters are confident. For Hutt, Mr Wilford is a certainty, and Mr Field will most likely win in' Otaki.
