DESERVED SCORN.

An extraordinary scene occurred •during the progress of a mission meeting m Chicago. A certain preacher has been known for his "zeal in relieving the poor and in making converts, and before an immense, congregation in the Union Mission Hall lie exorted sinners to come forward and "to lay down their burden of sin" in ;order that they might be forgiven. Among the" penitents was a young woman. The preacher did not notice her until he heard her exclaim: "Here's your little burden of sin." As she spoke, she placed a bundle at his feet. He gazed at her in terror as from the bundle came the pathetic wail of an infant. "Here is your child"," the woman said; "you would not support it, and I cannot support it any longer. Confusion overcame the meeting, and the teacher turned to the dispersing congregation. "The woman tempted me," he said. 'I have been a backslider, but am whole again, and have returned to the Christian life."
