OBITUARY.

MRS. E. S. EPPS.

Another old settler in the person of Mrs Eliza Symes Epps, passed away at her residence, Nile street East, on March 23, aged 74 years. Deceased was the eldest daughter of the late Mr Stephen Close, and she came to New Zealand with her parents in the good ship Mary Ann in the year 1842. She was married twice, to Mr J. C. M. Karsten and Mr Thomas Epps, both of whom she surviA r ed, and by her first marriage had ten children, seven daughters and three sons, eight of whom are still living. The late Mrs Epps resided in Nelson 66 years, and experienced many vicissitudes in the early days of the settlement, lt was her pleasure to converse on the many interesting events that took place in the days gone by. She, with her parents" witnessed the wreck of the Fifeshire on the Arrow Bock, near the old entrance of the harbor, and saw the first ship, the Phoenix, launched in Nelson. The vessel went to sea shortly afterwards, and was'never heard of again. Her father and the late Mr James Fuller started the first saw pit in the birch forest over the Maitai river, now cleared and occupied by smiling homesteads. The deceased lady was a good mother and a kind and generous friend. The family will have the sympathy of a large" cucie of friends in their bereavement.

Mrs John Heberley, who died at Picton last week, was born in Somerset, England, in ISIO, and arrived in New Zealand with her parents, Mr and Mrs Hockey, fifty one years ago (says the "Marlborough Herald"). The Hockey.family landed at Wellington, and tbree or four years af eiwaids they removed do Collingwood. In 1858 Miss Hockey was married to Mr John Heberley in the Anglican Church, Nelson, and eventually they shifted to Blenheim, and later on to Ficton and neighborhood, where they Jiave remained for over 30 years.
