SERIOUS GRASS FIRES.

"Whangarei, March 6. The serious gtass fires at Wbatitiri are causing much destruction and discomfort. Already the clearings or ten settlers have been - cleaned bare. A number of sheep perished. The cattle owners managed to get 1000 head into shelter. In the district ; bushes comprising over 2000 acres are left as barren as a desert. A six-roomed house, recently built, and owned by Mr Telfer, was totally demolished. Unless heavy rain intervenes the fare will continue soma miles further to Wairua River. Two men were cut off yesterday, and they made a perilous dash into safety.
