Murchison, August 16.

A man named John Hughes, died at the Owen Junction this morning. The deceased had been in the employ of Downie Bros, for some yearß, but he had been ailing for some time. Hughes was aged abont fifty, and leaves a wife and four young children.

The remains of the late Mr Frederick Taylor, who served in the 58th Regiment, were interred on the Ist August in the Ne:v Cemetery with military honors, the College Cadets providing the escort and the firing party, and the bugler of the Nelson Rifles sounding the " Last Post" at the graveside. The military proceedings at the graveside were in charge of Staff Sergfc. - Major Redmond. Lisutenant-ColonelJoyce lias received a letter from the relatives of the deceased thanking him foi according a military funeral, and he has written to Mr H. L. Fowler, Principal of the Nelson College, thanking him for granting a half-holiday, and to Major Broad, thanking him for permitting the cadets uo attend.

The funeral of the late Mrs Margaret E. Hall, r relict of the late Mr £1. T. Hall, took place on the Bth August, the service at the graveside being read by the Eev. H. N. Baker. Deceased, who was an old resident of Nelson, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, after a brief but painful illness. The late Mrs Hall was held in high esteem by a wide circle of friends, and the family of three sons and three daughters, who are left to mourn their loss will have very sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement. The deceased was of a kindly disposition and at all times a willing helper in case of sickness, and she will be greatly missed by many presoDS who have experienced feindness at her hand 9. j

It is understood that the new school on the Wangapeka Estate will be opened this vveeir. Already some of the settlers have ploughed portions of their sections, while others are only waiting for teams before breaking up the land.

It is notified in the "New Zealand Gazette" that the services of the Westport Garrison Artillery Volunteers have been accepted. Recently it will be remembered, the I Battery, with headquarters at Westport, was disbanded,
