FTATAL COLLISION AT SEA. BARQUE SUNK.

SEVERAL LIVES LOST. J Received August 16, 0 i 6 a.ni; Brisbane, Augiist 15; , The steamer Arawatta has. arrived from Sydney. She reports that at three o'clock on Wednesday morning, about eight miles off Port Stephens, she collided with and sank the barque Ingeboig bound from Wellington to Newcastle in ballast. The barque sank in ten minntes. ..Boats were lowered by the Arawatta aiicl these picked np three men in ths water and five others climbed over the Arawatta's bow. The Arawatta remained in the locality till after daylight but there was no further sign of life and she resumed her voyage. The saved are Karl Albertson, first mate; John Sorenson, second mate; C. A. Lewis, native of Westpoit, A.8., who shipped at Wellington ; Adblph Benjamesdn A. B. ; Franz Alder (steward) ; Ernest Kiobikej A.B. ; Bans Lusader, A.B<: Alex Krentzlin A. B. The missing are Captain Schmidt; George Harrison, 18, A.8.. He shipped at Wellington ; George Teder, sailmaker; Axel Gottfriedsen, aged 16; Kanut Hansen, A.B. ; Karl Fiiander, A, B. ; Emil Palmer, A.8.. The captain lost his life in trying to save the youth Gottfriedsen. The Arawatta was doing twelve knots at the time and the barque about tout knots. The Sailors State that the barque was showing all l.er lights. The Arawatta's bowa are considerably damaged. . Received August 16, 1.4 a.m. Krentzlin Lewis and Sorensen jumped overboard at the moment of the collision and were rescued by the boats. There was no panic on the Arawatta though tbere was a great commotion for several minutes. The vessels remained interlocked for a few seconds but as soon as the Arawatta backed out the barque went down. Those drowned were on the watoh below and they had not time to save themselves. Captain Schmidt could have climbed aboard the Arawatta, but he ran below to arouse the youth Gottfriedsen who was asleep. The captain had almost passed the youth over tothe outstretched hands of those on the Arawatta wben the vessels suddenly separated and neither tho captain nor the boy was seen again.
