Timaru, Julyl23. < A black whale measuring between 40 and 50 feet in length, has been washed up on the beach a~few Smiles ' north of Timaru. '^Z*^ I **fcß Auckland, July 23. < An infant of Mrs William Smith, aged five months, was found dead in ' bed beside its mother yesterday morning. An inquest is proceeding. : The Ohinemuri district suffered much from the recent gale and flood on Saturday night and Sunday. The river overflowed its banks afc 1.30 p.m. on Sunday, and the main street in Paeroa was like a mill race. The low-lying land was deeply flooded, and many residents removed from their homes in vehicles. The water drained off with the ebb tide early on Monday morning. Napier, July 23. A private cable states that several members of the New Zealand team now in Australia, whose names are mentioned in the published lists of the professional toara, deny that they have been included. The Waterside Workers (wharf laboureis) Conference decided to-day to urge the Government to institute a quarterly inspection of ships' (wharf gear; further, to urge the Government to amend the Harbours' Act in the direction of providing buildings for the exclusive usa of men employed at each port with hot and cold water baths and lookers.
