CITY COUNCIL.

' A speoial meeting of the Connoil I was held last night, when there were r present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr Piper), and Councilors Light--3 band, Grace, Hampson, McConchie, . Franklyn, Snodgrass, Bißley, Field, and Roberton. The meeting was held for the purl pose of receiving applications for the position of Drainage Enigneer. The Mayor said there were applicants who did not wish to have their names divulged, and he suggested whether they should not go into committee. It was agreed to go into committee, Press representatives to remain on condition that the names of the unsuccessful candidates were not published. The Acting Town Clerk said there were Sfiteen applications, and he proceeded first to read the applications,it being agreed that the Councilors should individually examine the testimonials during the next week, and that a special mebting be held on Thursday evening next at seven o'clock to make the appointment. The Mayor mentioned the matter of calling tenders for power and ejector stations, and said the Acting Town Clerk thought it was useless to send specifications to outside places without plans. The Acting Town Clerk said Mr Mestayer had telegraphed stating tbat it was immaterial which ejector station was constructed first, but suggesting that if all three were! gone on with simultaneously it would expedite work. Cr Robertson said that if they were going to call for tenders in Wellington they had better call for tenders for all three stations; it would not pay a contractor to come to Nelson for one. Cr Field moved, and Cr Bisley seconded, that the previous resolu tion to advertise for tenders in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Nelson be rescinded, and that tenders be advertised in Wellington and Nelson for constru c,tion of power house and three ejector stations in four separate contracts. Cr Franklyn thought the motion a good one, as it would give a chance to large contractors to secure the whole, and also to smaller contractors to secure one or more. The motion j was carried unanimously. It was agreed to ask Mr Mestayer to allow the plans, etc., to be seen at his office.
