FATAL FIRE IN A COALMINE.

THREE LIVES LOST. Inveroargill, June 21. A serious fire broke out in the Nightcaps coal mine at six o'clock this morning, when three workmen named William Duncan, Patrick Walsh and Wm. Carson were cut off. Duncan's body has been recovered. Up to three o'clock this morning Walsh and Carson had not been rescued, though some heroic attempts had been made to reach them. The rescue parties were considerably hampered through black damp. Duncan, Walsh and Carson are married men, and have families dependent upon them. Latest, 9.35 p.m. News was received from the Nightcaps coalmine at nine o'clock tonight that the dead bodies of Walsh and Carson had been recovered. Mr Handyside, managing director of the mine, and Mr Qreen, the Inspector of Mines, start for Nightcaps early in tho morning.
