WAKEFIELD.

From Our Own Correspondent Dr Hugh Pearless gave the usual weekly lecture to the Bearer Corps last night. As usual with this company, there was an excellent muster. \ At the Literary Society on Tuesday, the evening was spent in a mock election of a Mayor and Council to represent this Borough. Mr Wm. Smith was in_.tbe chair. The candidates for Mayor were Messrs Kingsland and Peart. The proceedings were very interesting and full of humor. The speakers on behalf of Mr Kingsland, who was dead against borrowing, but who wished the residents to do necessary improvements without resorting to a loan,' were Miss E» Thomas, Dr Hamilton, and Messrs "R. O'Connor, K. Baigent, and George Robertson. Mr Peartj m the other hand, went into an elaborate scheme for drainage, water supply, public gardens, and lighting. He was supported by Miss Hewlett, Messrs Hodgson, Kobertson, Evans, and Wilkins. A ballot was taken ; 22 were for Mr Kingsland and 23 for Mr Peart. The Chairman declared Mr F. B Peart elected first Mayor of Wakefield, with Messrs E. Hodgson, A. Kobertson, R. Peppin, H. Evans, George Wilkins, and George Johnson as the first Council. The Technical School is well attended. Mr Bruce had a good class on Monday evening. The usual country scholars from Belgrove to Brightwater came on Tuesday for woodwork and cookery and Miss Roberts had a big class to-day for book-keeping, typewriting and shorthand. The weather has been unusually cold, the thermometer registering 24deg. Fah. in the shade. Mr Carlisle, Sanitary Inspector, visited the township to-day. 1 don't think he found the drainage altogether satisfactory. The fact is that we are trying to drain out the wrong way. The outfall should enter the Wai-iti river much lower down, or else go beyond Mr Gray's property and in to Hooper's creeK. Some improvement will have to be made. June 19th, 1907.
