THE GOLDEN BAY CEMENT WORKS, LIMITED.
What was probably the most unique meeting of officials of a public company ever held in New Zealand took nlace last month. The Wellington "Directors, the Secretary and the Solicitor met the Nelson Directors here together with the Cement Expert, and a Danish Cement Engineer of wide experience, !on Saturday, and proceeded by special steamer to the site in Golden Bay, which baa been acquired by the Company whereon to establish, the works. * Only one out of the Dine Directors was abseDt. The party went carefully over the property, and found enormous quantities of limestone and clay situated right on the water's edge, with a magnificent factory site lying in a small valley between two limestone hills, and a nice stream uf water flowing down the centre. The spot upon which the works are to be erected was selected, ami probably no better position exists upon the face of the globe. The material lies right against the spot fixed upon for the buildings, and can be made to pass from quarry to the wharf right through the factory almost, if not entirely by gravitation. The Directors selected a site for the wha:f required to enable the material to ba conveniently shipped. They spent some time in taking soundfings, and found that at low spring tides a dei th,of from eight to ten feet could be obtained by running out a comparatively short wharf. After selecting the ground, a formal meeting was held, when it was determined to push on a vigorous campaign to rai3B the capital required to put up a plant of the most modern design. The whole party wero lond in their praises of the property and the locality. There can be no doubt that worus so situated will command the whole of the northern end of the South Island and the southern part of the North Island. The prospects ahead of the Company, with a splendid property, a central situation, and a growing demand, are such as to render failure a very remote possibility. The Wellington members of the party returned to Wellington yesterday, having spent a most enjoyable time in this district, and all are enthuisastic in their determination to establish tho cement and lime works in this district. In addition to tho constituents for cement making, the Company has a large area of of coal upon the property.
