BILLIARDS.
There was a good attendance at the Commercial Hotel Billiard room on June 3rd to witness an exhibition match between Mr H. W. Stevenson, the world's champion, and Mr H. Saunders. the champion conceding the local player 700 points out of a thousand. Mr Saunders piayed a sterling, good game, scoring 2.J2, making his total 932, when Mi Stevenson ran out on an unfinished break. Mr Saunders' largest break was 41, and double figures were fairly frequent in his score.- Mi Stevenson gave a marvellous exhibition of the game, and revealed to wbat pitch of perfection the science of billiards has been brought. His was not a monotonous display oi cradle cannons, but a brilliant exposition of all round play, and applause, hearty and frequent, greeted him. His scoring in the first; portion of the match was extremely rapid, the first good break, of 113, being knocked up in ten minutes. This was the third break, at the fifth he ran up to 100, at the seventh 52, and at the ninth, 138, which was the largest break of the match. Id compiling this break he scored about 50 in a series of nursery cannons. which were a feature of the match, the wonderful command, of "strength," and the delicacy of his play at this period evoking unstinted applause. Other good breaks made by the champion were 76, 55, 69, 43, 61, 37, and 93. At the close of thn match Mr Stevenson gave an exhibition of fancy strokes, and showed how the famous "cradle" cannon is played, in doing bo he scored fifty cannons in about two minutes, and one seeing the performance can understand bow, with the cue In the hands of a master, the immense totals recorded can be amassed.
