HOCKEY.

' SIX-A-SIDE LADIES' TOUBNAf ; MEtfT, Tfae annual six-a-side ladies' hoc« : key tournament took place at the 5 Botanical Reserve yesterday after- * noon, in the presence of a largo at" ' tendance of spectators. The weather " was fine, but cold, a keen suufch east ' wind making it unpleasant for onlookers. The ground was in very ; fair order considering toe recent i spell of wet weather, but was a trifle slippery in places, and not conducive to fast play. The games were ' all well contested, and the form displayed by some of the members of the recently formed cluba wag exoeli leat. They shaped really well, but ; were lacking in combination which of course will come with practice i and experience. Ten teams entered i for the tournament, which was won by the Wakatu A team, which played off in the final with the Wakatu B. The former, who also won the tournament last year, gave a capital exposition of the same, displaying a thorough knowledge of all the fine points. Their hitting was hard and sure, and the passing and dribbling very neat. The names of the winning team are: Misses F. Field, V. Coster, A. Kelling, Whitwell, L. Coster, and A. Mercer (captain). Each match consisted of two spells of five minutes' duration, and if there were no soores, or scores were even at the conclusion, the game was continued until one side carried play into their opponents' circle, instead of playing on until a score was actually made. So well contested were some of the games that they were decided in this way. The first match, Wakatu B v. Wainui B, was very evenly contested, neither side scoring in the allotted time. Flay was continued, and the Wakatus, who had the best of the play all through, took play into the Wainui circle and were awarded the match . The Wakatu Cv. College A was won by the latter by one goal id nil j Miss Clifford scoring. The Collegians had the best of the game, and narrowly missed scoring on occasions. The Wakatu A defeated the College B by one goal to nil, after a bard fought game, the Collegians playing treally well against their more experienced opponents. Although the Wakatus had the best of the first spell there was no score, but in the second half Miss Kelling shot a fine goal. The next match Kia Ora v. St ( John's opened rather sensationally, Miss Heath, after the bully-off, dribbling down to the Kia Ora circle and scoring forest. John's within one minute of the opening. The remainder of the game was very inter' esting, the Kia Ora's stru gling hard o equalise matters, but without tuccess. The Wainui Ay. Thistles^was a very fast' game, and after playing five minutes over time was given in favour of the latter, who bad the best of the game all through. They were attacking nearly all the time, but failed to score, the defence of the Wainuis being sound. The Wakatu By. College A was another well contested game, and resulted in a win for the former by one goal to nil. Miss Boon scoring just on the call of time, The W&katu A defeated the St. John's by two goals to nil. On opening the former carried play into St. John's territory and narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. In the seccond half Miss Coster scored a goal from a scramble in the St. John's circle, and shortly after the Wakatuß were given a pother goal, the St. John's goal keeper bitting the ball baok through the posta. " The Thistles again played well in their match with the Wakatu B, which was not decided until the time limit had expired, Miss Clotten scoring for the Wakatus. After a few minutes' spell the Wakatu B. met the Wakatu A in the final, and a stubbornly contested game was won by the latter Ly one poal to nil, Miss Field scoring after a good dribble. The A's played with more combination than the Bs, but the latter attacked vigorously several timeß, and it was only the excellent goal keeping of Miss Mercer tbatprevented them from scorinn. Tbt utber members of the A team also played well, and they desarvbd their Win. Miss CJutten plfijred splendidly for the B team. Messrs ttarford, Savage, Dou^an, Harris, and Browne acted as referees.
