The friends of Captain Stewart, of . he Nelson Rifles, will regret to hear j of his serious illness. Captain g Stewart attended a parade of his t corps on Monday evening, when h r appeared to be in his usual health but during the night h 3 was take, suddenly ill, and medioal aid was summoned. His condition was so serious that his immediate removal * to a private hospital was ordered, and an operation was performed, i Yesterday Captain Stewart was I slightly batter. \ Lieut. -Colonel Joyce, 0.C.D.. ac* companied by Staff Sergt,-Majoi Redmond, will inspect the Motueks Mounted Rifles on Saturday next. On the following Wednesday Colonel Joyce will inspect the Takaka Mounted Rifles at Takaka. Mr H. D. Lusty, chief of the reporting staff of the New Zealand Herald, is paying a visit to his relatives in the Nelson district, prior to taking up his duties in the Press Gallery at Parliament next week. Mr G. B. Nicholls, the wellknown Southern Temperance advocate, is leaving Otago for Sydney. He has been engaged "by the New South Wales Alliance to take part in the campaign in connection with the local option poll in August.
