WRECK OF S.S. KIAORA.
Auckland, June 18. The Rurvivors of the Kai Ora who arrived at Kawhia yesterday were scantily clothed, and mostly badly hurt. Mr Lester, second engineer, has broken a bone in bis right foot. Mr Baggatrom, chief engineer, * was badly bruised, having been caught in the ri ginS and dragged under when the steamer went down. 2ut Partridge, a passenger had one leg broken, bis back hurt, and he sustained internal injuries. Mrs Cox, aged 76 j-ears, was badly cut about the face, and is suffering severely from hardship and exposure. A further batch of the Kia Ora survivors arrived to-day by the s.s. Muratai. They were Messrs De Wolffe, chief officer; J. Robinson, second officer; E. L. Baggatrom, chief engineer; J. P6tersen, chief steward; W. Johnson, cadet steward; .h- De Calmer, cook's boj r ; Miss Keller, stewardess; and Mr Partridge, a passenger; who is suffering from a b rots en leg and broken rib. The latter was transferred to the Earawa in the afternoon, and left for his home at Eltham, via New Plymouth. Mrs Cox was landed at Raglan. All bore signs of exposure. There is still doubt as to the number of persons drowned. The chief steward states that there were 13 adults, a Maori boy, and two children on board, besides 19 of the ship's crew, making a total of 35. Uecollected the tickets after leaving Waitara. Only 31 have been accunted for. The stewardess] commends § the fortitude and forbearance of all, especially the women.
