Hanson, of Nelson Garrison Band, who won the tenor horn solo competition, played "Song Birds of ThuringenWood." The Judge, in his official report of Hansen's performance, said: "The soloist mis-struck his first note, but made a tine run to the top C. The following run was not too clean. The tone was very fine and the high notes were beautifully delivered. The whole of the opening part was quite artistic. Thema (andante) was effective from all points of view. first variation was very cleanly played. The second variation, with the exception of one slip, was finely rendered. Adagio sustenutp was en the fast side, but good otherwise. Polaccr. was distinctly good. A clever rendering and thoroughly satisfying."
