THE NEWTOWN CRICKETERS.
A teani of cricketers from the Newtown Clwh (Wellington); have, during the Christmas holidays, been touring the Waimea district, playing hatches at the various Centres. Six matches were played, only one being lost, to Tapawera. On Monday evening, at the Wakefield Hotel, the visitors entertained the residents of the district at a "smoker" in recognition of the kind hospitality which had been extended to them during their visit. The following toast list v/as gone through :— "The King, " by the Chairman ; ' ' Belgrove, ' ' proposed by Mr J. Sexton, responded to by Mr F. Fowler; "Brightwater and Tapawera," by Mr C. Ai Atkinson— Mr Hall; "Richmond and Wanderers," by Mr J. Itfash— Mr Knapp ; ' ' Combined Team and Residents of the District i by the Chairman (MrW. A: Worth)— Mr G. Harris; "Absent Frjends," by Mr J; Day— Mr G; Johnson; "The Ladies," by Mr Maplesdon; "The Host and Hostess," by Mr j. . Sextcn, who spoke of the kindness and, attention bestowed On theni by Mr arid Mrs Durbridge. Songs were contributed by Messrs G. Johnson; F. Fowler, G. Harris, Atkinson, T. Turner, J. Nash, J. Sexton, and several . others. The pleasant function concluded with the National Anthem. The members of the Newton team have presented Mr Worth (the manager) with a piece of plate, suitably inscribed, in recognition of his services to the team.
