NEW ZEALAND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.

Christchurch, January 2. The annual conference of the Educational Institute of New Zealand opened to-day, when a largo number of delegates were present from all parts of the Oolony. The delegates were welcomed by Mr Buddo, M.H.R.. the Hon C. C. Bowen, and several local professors. each delivering a congratulatory address. The President delivered his opening address. He reviewed the work of the year. Special reference was made to the death of Mr Seddon, during whose career, he said, very great improvements were made in tbe conduct and methods of the Education Department. The new Minister Hon. G. Fowlds) had already shown businesslike methods, arid sympathetic appreciation of the teachers' work. He also referred to the advantages which would accrue by centralising the Inspectors, and centralising the country schools by means of a system of providing conveyances for the children.
