PETROLEUM AREA.
There is considerable activity in petroleum prospeoting all over the north-western part of Taranaki at present, and samples of oil are daily reaching town from the outling districts. The extent of the oil area has been proved to be considerably greater than first wa3 supposed, although the Taranaki Petroleum Company is the only one that has gone deep enough to produce a gusher.
