FATALITY WHILE WELL SINKING.

OVERCOME BY FOUL GAS. Rotorua, February 19. Two men named Brady and Radforp were engaged in sinking a well about a mile from here, and on resuming work this morning Brady was the first to go down the well, but he was immediately overcome by foul gas, and fell to the bottom. Radford sought the assistance of Goodson Bros, and others, and Fred Goodson went down the well to endeavor to get Brady up, but no sooner was he down than he, too, was overccme. Fortunately hie had taken the precaution of putting a rope round his body, and by this means he was hauled to the surface. He was unconscious and remained so, being under medical treatment. Sergeant Phair got Brady'., body up with grappling irons, but life was extinct. The fumes from the well were overpowering. Brady was a single man, and it is believed that his parents reside at Otahuhu. Later. Goodson remained unconscious until five o'clock, but since then he has improved. Brady had only descended about twenty feet when he was overcome. It was lucky for Goodson .hat he was hauled up so speedily, for had ii; been otherwise he would have succumbed.
