Big Demand for Laborers. — It is stated that the Labour Department requires a thousand laborers for the Main Trunk, Midland, WaiparaCheviot and Blenheim-Cheviot railway construction works. Tenders Invited. — The Collingwood County Council invite tenders, to close on Monday sth March, for the erection of a cart bridge over the Kaituna river. N.Z.F.U.— A meeting of the Wakapuaka Farmers' Union, advertised for this evening has been postponed owing to the schoolroom being engaged. Permanent Building Society. — The usual monthly subscription to the Permanent Building Society will be payable at the. Society's office on Monday and Tuesday next. Lord Plunket's Good Sense.— lt was proposed to give the Governor a banquet at Stratford, but he wrote through his secretary to say that, "whilst the Governor would have much pleasure in accepting this hospitality, he wonders whether an informal conversazione would not be easier for your committee to arrange, and which would suit his Excellency equally well. The only object the Governor has in asking the Mayor to consider this is that it would give his Excellency the opportunity of making the peisonal acquaintance of considerably nior,e of your-citizens and neighbour's than could be done at a banquet. Stepping: a Chain.— At the recent Feilding Show a novel competition was introduced. A prize of one guinea was offered for the most accurate stepping of a chain.
