MISCELLANEOUS NOTES

Yesterday the Council employees, under the direction of Mr John Henderson, City Engineer, and Mr S. G. Eobinson, were busily engaged completing the decorations in Trafalgar street. Tbe nikau palms, greenery, etc., obtained from the bounds, have been placed on the verandah posts and poles erected in the street, and with the hundreds of flags which have been hung from side to side from Bridge street to the Church steps, make an effective display. The Arahura brought upwards of one hundred visitors for the Carnival from Wellington yesterday morning. Owing to the dense smoke caused by bush fires on tbe West Coast, the Mapourika did not arrive at Westport until noon yesterday, consequently she will not reach NeJson with her complement of West Coast visitors until nine o'clock this evening. The interprovincial cricket match at the Park on Tuesday and Wednesday promises to be a good representative game. The visitors have a team better than usual. The outfield has been cut, and a good wicket prepared. Arrangements have been made for afternoon tea for the teams. Play commences at two o'clock each day. It is understood an alteration or two has been rendered necessary in the Nelson representative cricket team. These Mr Stiles, the Secretary, will make and post to-night at Mr Stallard'a.

In connection with the fireworks display to be held at the Park on •Tuesday evening by tbe Chinese residents, in aid of the funds of tbe Hospital, it is safe to predict that the public may expe«fc something very much above the ordinary in regard to the set pieces. There will be three magnificent pieces, one representing General Wak Tv, on his birthday. In Chinese mythology. General Wak Tv is supposed to have lived one hundred years ago, been the father of one hundred children, and when ninety years of age had one thousand grandchildren and ereat-grandchildren. The fireworks describe him on his birthday, surrounded by his descendants, and depicted as the happiest man in the world. Emperor Hong Me Wong, who before dying expressed a wish to visit Heaven and Hell, and his feelings in these places will be described in a magnificent pyrotechnioal display. The third set piece will depict the joy of a father and mother over their first born child.

The book will not only £ive the fullest information required on race days, but serve as a splendid souvenir of the Jockey Club's Carnival meeting of 1906 The programme was printed by Messrs Bond, Finney and Co. for Mr F. N. .Tones. Tho swimming sports, to be held on Friday and Saturday next promise to bo a great success, and entries for the championship events constitute a record for the Colony. Freyburg (who was the New Zealand representative at the Australian championsnips last, year), Hegglun and Wilton, from Wellington, Hogan, Mullor and Dale, from Wanganui, Bell and Kernott, from Auckland, two reps, from Dunedin, and J. Ilillson, horn Christchurch, will compete in the championship events. , The latter recently equalled the lato B. Kieran's record for 220 yards. Several local swimmers are also in training, and should have chances in one or two of these events. The secretary has received a wire from K. Ross. Club champion, who is at present in Christchurch, asking to be entered for the 100 yards championship. Ross is in splendid form, doing 50 yards in 31secs, and should show up well in this event. Several officers of the Association will be present at the meeting, including Mr W. Churchward, secretary of the Wellington' centre. Mr W. Johnston, of Christchurch, etc. It is notified by advertisement that entries for the motor launch races will be received ; up to the 2nd prox. A fly-casting tournament, under the auspices of tho Nelson Anglers' Club, will be held at tbe Queen's Gardens on Tuesday afternoon fit four o'clock. Visiting anglers are invited to compete, and visitors win be provided with afternoon ten. The following horses arrived yesterday" bjthes.s. In a vacant allotment in Bridge street near Messrs Fairey Bros.' a unique attraction will.be the exhibition in a large marquee of the New Zealand giant children. Wilfrid is eight years of age, weighs 16 stone 61bs, "and has a chest capacity of 48 inches, and is sft high. Ruby,° his sister, is 12 years of age, and weighs 15 stono 10 lbs. The children are being exhibited by their parents, who are old residents of Foxton, where the father is an ex-mayor of the town The parents have seven children altogether, but all the others are of ordinary size. This evening Mr E. Bates will give an exhibition of lassoing and rough riding at Richmond at Mr Hunt's paddock. Mr Bates claims to have put up a world's record at Richmond on Thursday, catching and

throwing two steers with 20 yards Hying start in 39 sees.

Miss Harris announces that her paintings oE New Zealand wild iloivors will be on view at her studio, Nile street East, during Carnival week from 9n. m. till Ip. m. There aro a hundred pictures on view, this exhibition being n much larger one than is generally known. and visitors will, we aro sure, feel well repaid by a visit. The studio is within a minute's walk of the Post Office,and no charge is made for admission.

Tho Harmonic Society will give a miscellaneous concert "on Thursday evening next, when si very attractive programme will bo presented. There will bo a number ol! orchestral pieces, soveral choruses, a pianoforte solo and a couple of songs by Miss Lloyd Hassall. Tickets can be obtained at several shops in town, and the box plan is at Jackson's, where those who intend to be present at the concert are recommended' to reserve their seats as soon as possible.

The Temperance Social Clu broom will be formally opened on Monday evening in Trafalgar street, above Mr Garner's shop.

A grand sacred magnopbone entertainment will be given in the Bontanical Reserve to-morrow afternoon. Silver coin admission, and 25 per cent of the takings will be given to the Hospital funds.

The members of the Maitai Lodge, No. 15, U.A.0.D.. are organising a social evening's amusement on Tuesday evening next to welcome to Nelson members of other Druid Lodges who are visiting the city during the week. On Wednesday evening the members of the Lodge will take part in the torchlight procession, iu\d will display a Druidieial tableau of a character quite new to Nel9on.
