THE VOLUNTEERS.
The monthly inspection parade took place on Wednesday evening, and was the first; fine night for four inspection nights. The inspection was unique in regard to the number of medals issued for long service; There was a good muster of all corps, and of the Band, and before proceeding to the Park for exercise Lieut. -Colonel Wolfe, 0.C.D,. presented long [service medals to: — Chaplain Major, Bishop C. O. Mules, Captain G. Hammond, Lieut. P. Eicketts (A.U.L. ), and Battalion Sergt. -Major W. Wanstall. In each case Colonel Wolfe was able to draw attention to the very keen interest displayed by the recipients in the Volunteer cause. Three hearty cheers were accorded the medallists, of whom Nelson has probably the largest proportion in the Colony. In addition to the batalion, the H Battery paraded under Lieut. Grace for work in marching movements at Trafalgar Park. In the absence of Major Harkness, Captain Bryant, Battalion Adjutant, took: command of the infantry, and under his command, and that of Captains Arnold and Hammond, a number of movements were undertaken. Officers commanding units are at present engaged in framing recommendations for discussion at the forthcoming conference of district commanding officers to be held in Wellington. The Military Board set up to enI quire and report upon the circumstances connected with the death of Mr C. Mills have completed their work, and the evidence and repor!^ is to be forwarded to the G.O.C. the forces. Mr J. Stringer is making progress with the dilll shed improvements. Although the improvements au not considered in any way sufficient, still they will afford/ L greater facilities for drill.
