Dunedin, September 13. At Tapanui to-day," Stott and Bromley were charged with murdering Ham Sing Tong on August 21st. The Crown Prosecutor (Mr Fraser) said it would be proved that Bromley had in his possession a rifle that would discharge such a bullet as had caused deceased's death; that Bromley borrowed the rifle for a day, but had not returned it; that; on the night of the murder Stott and i Bromley were seen in Tapanui, and ! left for their home about nine; o'clock; that underneath deceased's; body was found a belt, evidently j there had been a struggle, and ■ 1 during ifc the deceased tore the belt , 1 from the waift of one of the men, and that the belt that night was : practically the property of Bromley ; ; that in deceased's hand was found a j portion of a neckerchief, which also ; bad evidently been torn off during \ the struggle, it was not of a common J type, and Stott was possessed of one exactly similar; that deceased's j vest, in which he usually kept a roll j of notes, was missing ; that Stott J was known to be in an impecunious condition, but a day or two after the murder he was in Heriot very flush of money, producing note after note; that concerning this money he told different stories as to how it came mo his possession.
