Nelson Amateur Operatic Society. —Seven years ago this Society pro duced the opera "Les Cloches de Corneville" with very considerable auccesß, and latterly there has beet a growing desire on the part oJ members to again stage the work, At a special general meeting of the Society held on Sept. 4th, at the Co-Operative Society's Rooms, Mi A. P. Burns »n the chair, there waf a good attendance of members, and, after discussion, it was unanimouslj resolved to reproduce the opera for three nights during Carnival Week, conditionally upon the sum of £5( being raised to guarantee prelimin ary expenses. It was also decided to stage a comedy for two nights. A deputation, consisting of Messrt Burns, Finney, Wallace and Levier was appointed to wait upon the Carnival Committee in regard to the rent of the Theatre. Several new members were elected, bringing the strength of the Society up to fiftj active members. Correspondence was read from kindred Societies offering dresses, etc., and a subcommittee was appointed to gc through the scenery of the opera, which was specially painted for the Society by Mr Leader Wililams, the well-known scenic artist, and has been stored since the last production. The Secretaries were instructed to make enquiries for a conductor and other preliminaries, and to report at a meting to be held on Wednesday week. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Messrs Armstrong and Co., who have very kindly stored the properties of the Society for several years free ol charge. The usual compliment to the Chairman terminated the meeting. Chamber of Commerce. — A meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Sept. 5, Mi Cock presiding, when a quantity of correspondence was considered and several matters were dealt with. Dr Bell, the Chief of the Government Geological Deparment, intimated that, authority having been given, he would examine the coal measures in the vicinity of Murchison as soon as possible, but at present he is engagee in the neghborhood of Hokitika. A general desire was expresssed to offer facilities to the Accountant Students Association, and arrangements were suggested by which members of the Association might use the Chamber's room and peruse the papers therein. A letter from the Union S.S. Co., in reply to toe Chamber, stated that the Rotoiti's running was only for the winter months, and that it had been found necessary to curtail the runnings somewhat. In reply to a communication from the Canterbury Chamber relative to promoting trade with Japan, it was agreed to reply expressing sympathy with the proposal. Relative to the San Francisco mail service, it was agreed to request the Member for the City to bring under the notiico of the! authorities that the last mail could ' have reached Nelson fully twontyfour hours earlier than it did had the Mapourika been delayed in Wellington for an hour— she left half an hour before the mail train arrived.
