Accident at Oroixelles.— On Wednesday (Aug. 24) a young man named Henry Hippolite was travelling through the bush when, in the darkness, he fell over a cliff and lay where be fell till yesterday morning when he was found. He was brought to Nelson last evening by the Naomi and taken to the Hospital. We hear from Dr Mackay that he has sustained some nasty gashes about the face, and that one of his wrists was injured, but he does not appear to have been seriously injured. Damage by Hawks.— We learn that several farmers in this district have had lambs killed by hawks. One farmer found nine strong young lambs dead, and on examining them found they were all picked in the sides as by a bird. A watch waa kept, and another lamb was found, which a hawk was in the act of kill* ing. Others have met with a like experience. It is evident that the hawks, having learnt to destroy rabbits, are now paying their attention to lambs, as bunny has become almost exterminated in some districts. With the present and prospective value of lambs the losses sustained by some farmers is considerable. Farmers, especially those who have sheep on the hillsides, will do well to look out for hawks. The Volunteers.— The contractor, Mr J. A. Stringer, is making; good progress with the Drill Shed, which is expected to be finished in November. An additional room for the Non-Oommissioned Officers' Club is being provided. — The local office of the Defence Departmnt has been advised that Lieutenant Ricketts, o? the Active List, has been awarded the sixteen year medal for long and efficient service. — A confer* ence of Unit Commanders will^ be held in Nelson shortly to consider matters of interest to Volunteers. The recommendations of the conference will be submitted to a conference of officers commanding districts at which Lieutenant-Colonel Wolfe will be present, to be held in Wellington on the 26th of this month. A Successful Exhibitor.— Mr B. T. Savage *as advised yesterday that his Fox terrier bitch, which he entered in five classes at the Wellington Kennel Club's Show, had been very successful, securing no less than ive first prizes. Vital Statistics. — During the month of August, 1905, there were registered in Nelson 1 20 births, 18 < deaths and 10 marriages..
