Railways in South Africa. Received March 6, 12.20 a.m.
Capetown; March 5. Lord Milner on opening the Railway Conference at Johannesburg announced a proposal to pool the receipts. For the , estimated necessary Extensions, which would rec^iii* an expenditure of ten millions, five millions to come out of the guaranteed loan to be devoted to extensions. It was the duty of the Conference to determine which extension was the most urgent, and whether others might not advantageously be built privately. The net profits for the first financial year was two and a half millions. The contemplated reductions in through aiicl inland rates, nieaiit the railways of the two colonies would lose £375,000*
