Army Remounts.
New Zealand Horses First Merit/ London, October 19: ' ; Viscount Downe, reporting on the working of the Remount Department of the "War Office in Australia, asserts that owing to breeding for racing purposes th^ ma jpri ty of the surplus horses are weeds, lacking substance. There is not now the number of good horses that there were eight yeara ago, and _t was difficult in the country to buy one. It was doubtful if great benefit would be realised from Imperial- studs in Australia considering the expense necessary,
J deceived October 21, 1.10 a.m, London, October 20. * Viscount Downe in his report on remounts, says those drawn for the Indian market have greatly -reduced the margin of Australian supply, and advises that future purchases should be made through dealers. He adds J that New Zealand, while not having I a large supply, is the first among the colonies as regards merit, Victoria being next, and New South Wales third, South Australia fourth, and Queensland last.
