Shocking Assault. — Through an assault by her hUßband, a woman resident at the Fort bad her jaw broken a day or two ainoe, and the injury inflioted waß sufficiently severe to necessitate her removal to the hospital, where Bhe still lies. Maqistbats's Court. — At this Court yesterday, before the Stipendiary Magistrate, George Atkinson was fined.lg each in respect of a couple of horses for allowing them to stray in Halifax street. Acoidbnt.-— leiterday morning Mr Biohar 1 Thomas was in bis paddook holding a horse at the time an employee was endeavoring to oatoh another one, a young on* which gave some trouble. The horse held by Mr Thomas took alarm and knocked him down,; (rampling over him as it cleared, a way. Mr Thomas has been very ill for the past four months, and had no strength to resist the horse's struggles. Ha sustained a nasty out over the eye, and was trodden on in other parts. He was removed to hia residence near at band and there attended to by Dr Leggatt. We are pleased to learn that hia injuries are not a» serious bb at firs i thought, though, in bis state of health the shaking wilt tell severely upon him. The Druids.— A speoial meeting of the Maitai Lodge of the Ancient Order of Druids was held last night, the object being to take leave of a valued member in the person of Bro E. J. Barltrop. There was a good attendance, and Bro Jiokell, as District President, made a presentation to Bro Barltrop of a Draidioal jewel in the form of a Maltese crosb, bearing on its face the Druids' motto, and on the reverie " U.A.O D. To Arch Druid Barltrop, as a token of esteem from the Maitai Lodge, No. 301." The jewel, in tba production of which very considerable ariißtio skill was evinced, was the handiwork of Messrs Brown and Eerr, and it was made of Collingwood gold. Bro Barltrop suitably acknowledged the presentation, P.A. Bro Scott presided over the Lodge meeting. Stdd Hobsb.— We learn that Messrs Newman Bros have disposed of their fine draught entire, Bay King, winner of the first prise at the last A. and P. Show for beit draught entire, any age, to Mr Ihos. tlowey, of Westport, to which plaoe the horse will be shipped to-day in the Gralton. Dispiasof Dbapeby, Etc.— Lbsl evening the display under gaslight of a lot of pretty dress materials in soft shades, as well bb of drapery, etc, which was made at the establishment of Mrs Anstioe, Hardy street, commanded a good deal of attention. The Bpring and summer goods will be again on view tonight. Thb Theatbb.— The benefit performance in aid of the unemployed, to be given at the Theatre on Monday night by the Nelson 'Dramatic Clnb, when "Partners for Life 1 ' will be reproduced, promises to ba very largely attended. Already a number of tiokets have been scoured, and we team that some of the unemployed will spend to-day in seeking to sell more. United Gbickei Cltjb.— The members of this olub are requested to meet at Trafalgar Park at two o'clock this afternoon to open the season, when sides will be chosen. The Oid People's Homb.— The Rev P. W. Chatterton visited this institution on Thursday evening last, and gave an interesting account of his reoent visit to England. Whilst in Japan he met two Nelson ladies, Miss Hunter-Brown and Miss Paisley, who are engaged in missionary work there. As the time at his disposal did not admit of his mentioning further incidents in his trip than this visit to Japan, he purposes again visiting the institution to give an account of his Journey farther.

Mr Holmes has promised to communicate with the MayOr and to let him know as soon as any men can be set to work. Nelson Diocesan Synod.— We understand tbat the Diooesa i Synod is called for November 21st next, and will probably hold its meetings in the Provincial Hall. Outrageous Conduct. — Tha Police have in hand the matter of the attack upon tbe Chinamen on Thursday afternoon {by Thoa. Coles, and more will be heard of it. A Guide to Mabinerb Astray. — Yesterday morning, on learning that the buoy at the French Pass had drifted from its proper position, Mr Wilson Heaps, the Collector of Customs, at onoe reported .the fact to Wellington, and he subsequently reseived telegraphic advice from tbe Undersecretary that " Captain Allman proceeds to Frenoh Pass by Charles Edward to-night to see to buoy." The despatch with which tha matter is being attended to is highly commendable. Ennebgltn Co/ti Mining Company.— Tbe prospectus of this proposed Company is inserted as an advertisement in this issue. We learn that tbe coal now being taken out of the shaft by tbe men employed by the Prospeoting Association is of better quality than any hitherto met with on this ground. The Fbuit Doty.— ln connection with the duty on fruit, it may be pointed out that oranges, lemons, bananas, and pineapples are to be admitted free, and that, while a penny a pound is to bo imposed on most of tbe fruits produoed in Nelson duriDg the greater part of the year, the duty on applea and pears will only be a halfpenny per pound from the 14th July to tha 31st December in each year. Congregational Church. — At this Church to-morrow tbe Rev E. C. leaao will take for his subjeot in the morning •! Tha Divine Love," while in tbe evening he will hold tha usual monthly service for young people. St Babnabas, Stoke. — This Cbarob, whiob has been undergoing repairs, will be reopened to-morrow, when the Rev A. C, Wright will preach in the morning, and also in the afternoon. The Orphanage Band.— This Band will give a promenade concert in the Botanical Reserve to-morrow afternoon.
