Maori Murder Trial—Chief Justice.
Comments. Wanqandi, September 26. The Hukatere murder obbc was concluded at 9-30 to-night, afttr two dayB 1 sitting. The Maori jury, after over five hours' deliberation, retnrned a verdiot of manslaughter. In lenteucing the aooused (Wiri Eaabn Karau), his Honor the Chief Justice spoke very strongly, and eaid that in his opinion the jury had made a grave mistake, and had returned a verdiot contrary to the evidenoe. it was o be esumed, he said, that they believed the acoased's evidenoe, and disbelieved that of six other people. The act of the accused |, although the jury said it had been commit ted under provocation, was the act of a fiend and not of a human being. His honor sentenoed him to ten years hard labor.
