Relief Works for Unemployed.

The unemployed relief works have now been in operation nine weeks, and over £2300 has been paid in wageß. In the first week 79 men were employed, and over £37 paid in wages. In the ninth week 403 were employed, and £369 14s 8d paid in wage?. Tbe actual number oi -ppjioanta for work is 950.

At present 177 orders have been issued to applicants for employment od the works. Of these there are 112 marritd men and 65 single. Tbeir ages range from 17 to 74, and the list comprises men of nearly all nation alities. The number taken on praotioally exhaußts the list of unemployed now in the oity and no more oan be put on the present work. It is useless fpr any to apply unless in oaseß of extreme hardship. Men in the oountry are specially warned hot to oome into town, as no applioation can be oonßidertd unless accompanied by authentic proof that the applicant has been a resident in , Wellington for at least three months.
