Action for Slander.
i Wellington, Jane 19. la the Supreme Court to-day, Mrs Mary Ann McLean, the wife of a grocer, olaimed JE525 from Mrs Wills, otherwise known as Woman (?), fox slander. Judge BioLmond I at the outset expressed a doubt whether, even sopposiog a vetdiot was obtained, it would stand. The law in England was that an imputation against a woman of anchastity was not aetioDable unless made in writing, and unleis special damage was shown. He was not quite clear wheth r it was not the same in this country. He never knew whether something had not been done sinoe ha lasi eat to wlter the law. Ihe defendant did not appear, and the jury returned a verdict for £50. The question of law raised by bis Honor was reserved for farther oocsldeiation.
