NEW YEAR'S DAY.

Early yesterday morning the weather proved threatening, and before nine o'clock rain commenced to fall. Fall of hope, however, a good many holiday makers left town on the prospect of the olouds rolling by. Not a few pionio parties left in open carriages with umbrellas up, and dainty dresses must have Buffered before the hopes of tne wearers were realised. However, the rain held up about mid-day, and apparently a considerable number enjoyed their holiday. The united Sunday School pionio was arranged to be hold6n in Mr Gaukrodgar'a paddocks and bush at Foxhill, and a special train was announced to leave for this centra of attraction at nine o'clock. Some 500 children, together with a number of their friends, left by the train, and as ie \va3 still ruining whon they reached Wai-iti, it was arranged that they sbrpuld proceed no further, but take shelter in the large railway sheds at that station. With gloomy prospeots, refaga was sought, and it was with great satisfaction a subsequent improvement in thu weather was experienced, when, at about elev.,o o'clock, the railway authorities took the picnice-s on to their previously contemplated destination. Fortunately, from that time forth, the weather centinued fine, and in the afi.err.oon the children enjoyed themselves immensely, a number of games occupying their attention. Prior to leaving for home in the eveuing, tbt;.y gave hearty cheers for Mr Mao Lean, the Railway manager, and also for Mr Gaukrodger, who had kicidiy allowed the use of his pleasant grounds. The children had an abundance of good things, and their teachers and those who had the management of the picnic are to be complimented on the success which attended their efforts, especially as for a time at all events they labored under very trying circumstances. It is satisfactory to report that, so far as we have been able to learn, the holiday passed oil' without any mishap whatever. — ' The Colonist,' Jan. 2nd.
