JUBILEE CELEBRATION.
(From ' The Colonist,' J^a. 23.) A meeting of the Jnbilfie Committee was J held at the City Com: oil Chamber last night, when there wts a good attendance, his Worship^ tfea Mayor occupying the chair. | Mr Hbase reported that tho Harmonic Society would produce the oratoiio ol Samscjn on Wednesday 3rd. February. The following telegram was revived by his Worship the Mayor from Sir George Grey: — "Have delayed replying to invitation io hopes I renewed from time to lime that I might be able to take part in the celebration of the commencement of a great enterprise, the continued BuooeßS of which I havo watched with extreme pleasure, but I regret that an attack of bronchitis prevents me from undertaking a journey to Nelson. This is a great dissappointment, having hoped to meet again old friends who are still alive and the descendants of many who havo passed away, for whom I entertained a great regard. This pleasure I must forego, but am grateful to the Committee who thought of me on this occasion. George Gbey. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Finney, seconded by Mr Everett, that this meeting is sorry to learn that Sir George Grey will be unable to attend, and regrets the cause which prevents his attendance. A telegram was received from the Premier stating that he feared official appointments would prevent his being present at the Jubilee celebration. Mr Bond reported that a well attended meeting of the Children's Treat Committee had been held on the previous evening, at which a deputation from the country teachers had been received. Ie was resolved that the Committee would arrange for the country 1 children attending the celebration on the Monday, and provide refreshments for them. He said that after careful consideration the Committee found that it would cost £65 to entertain the children on the Wednesday, it being anticipated that 3000 would be present, and they proposed spending £5 on providing sports, &c. This only left a balance of £12 to pay for band and contingencies. The subCommittee therefore wished the General Committee to vote a further sum of £10 to enable them to provide refreshments for the country children on the Monday, Mr J. Harley said he had been opposed to giving a second treat on the Wednesday, but under the circumstances he moved that the £10 be granted. Mr House seconded the motion, which was carried. Mr Finney asked whether the Sub-Com-mittee had arranged for all school children being brought to town by rail at the cheap fare announced, of fourpence each. Mr Bird said the Committee would be to blame if children betwpen 12 and 15 were charged extra, as they had resolved to charge for their admission to the fete. Mr Finney said it was not so. The Committee was given to understand that all school children would be carried by railway any I distance during J übilee week for fourpence. A good deal of discussion followed, and a letter from the railway manager was produced. The Mayor referred to the proceedings of the Children's Treat Committee, and expressed his gratification at the fact that all were working harmoniously together to make the celebration a success. ' On the motion of Mr Grant, it was resolved that it be a recommendation to the Sports and Fireworks Committees to send invitations to those inmates of the Asylum, Old People's Home, etc, able to attend. In reply to a question the Mayor said that the Corporation had decided that the Jubilee tree should be planted in the Queen's Gardens. It was resolved that the tree be planted aft6r the old settlers dinner — about three o'clock. Mr Moller referred to the neoessity of closing Trafalgar Street for traffic during the proce3sion. The Msyor said the council would take action. In reply to Mr Snodgrass the Secretary said he had only some £28 to collect, and he anticipated very little trouble in getting it. On the mo -ion of Mr Maginnity it was agreed that the Literary Committee and the Old Settlors Dinner Committee should meet on Monday to orraego for speakers. In reply to Mr Bannehr. information was given as to the accommodation that will be available for visitors, and it appeared that provision was being made for a considerable number. Many formal matters were considered, and the Committee then adjourned till Tuesday next
