RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
YESTERDAY.
[Before J. Sharp and 0. Curtis, Esqs, J.J.P.") J. L. Adams v. T. Watson.—Claim £8512« Lid for rent. Mr Harley appeared for plain. ;iff, and Mr Pitt for defendant.
Mr Pitt stated that £63 10s 5d had bson paid by Mr Sinclair, to whom the laud in question had been assigned by defendant. Mr Harley opened the aaso, and oalled
J. L. Adams, the plaintiff, who deposed that he owned the land, for the rent of whioh the present action was brought. It was situated at Qrnaka. Witness did not know of tha assigaraent of--the land by defendant to Mr Sinclair until some time after it was made. A deduction of £23 2s %i had been made from the rent, but witness would not consent to this. This sura was partly for grazing and partly for the cost of a drain. Witness had arrangsd with defendant to allow Borne stock to ran en the land free of cost. As for the drain, it was not made of the required depth or width, and was no good to his land. There was a ease against him being heard .at Blenheim to-day, is which Ms neighbors had sued him for the cost of the drain.
Croaa-examiacd: He had not sued in this case at Blenheim because all the transactions had bnppaned in Nelson, Defendant only took the land as an agent.
Tha evidence of the defendant and Mr Sinolair had been taken at Blenheim.
After a long hearing, the Benoh reserved judgment until Tuesday next.
