CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor of the Colonist. gri^—Will you luudly allow mesa suiailt space in youi .columns to conect a lepoi made at the Subuiban Noith ] loensing meeting on the 9th inst., re the Ea\ -Valley Eoati Accommodation Hoq'sc, -where it States rthe house is situated tt Claik liver, and was no bettei than a lean-to, and lhat the applicant was a man named J. Olivei. In justice to myself I beg to state tbat the lean-to lcfoned to is pnit of a b'uil'dmg containing six looms, and would comfoitably accommodate half a dozen peisons in the meantime. The mam buildiug when completed will accommodate 4.0 peisons, and will cost £400, and is at piesent in comse ol election. The license was applied for in consideration that the travelling public should be temporarily accommodated in the meantime, there being at present no accommodation —that is, any benefit to travellers between Nelson and Mailborongh. This building is pleasantly Bituated at the Collins xi\ei. and is exactly half way between the abo\ementioned districts, and thai the applicant's name is William Oliver.—V burs, &c, ; ; William Oliver, .:: Half Way House. Eai Valley Road, June 11, 1884. ; To the Editor of the Colonist. Sib,—l am very glad to see that the Insurance Association have taken the step they have—viz., iri offering a large reward for information that will lead to the conviction ■ of any person or persons wilfully setting fire to premises throughout the provincial district. It is certainly, a. step in the right direction, and it is to be hoped that in future before any risks are;accepted or renewals granted by any office that the agents aud sub-agents will cause the necessary steps to be taken to ; prevent any .person from over insuring, by making proper enquiries as to the real value of premises or property to be insured, and by positively refusing t6: insure for more than two-thirds of the value, for there is no doubt • that the system now ; prevailing of over insuring (through not making proper enquiries os to value) is the greatest evil the honest person insuring has to contend with, not only from the danger of inceudiary fires, but also from the high premiums which" this latter evil causes. There is no doubt that; every.honestly disposedppi-t>on will only be too glad to assist the Insurance Companies in ... every.way they possib'y can in order to attain ,: this end, theie being no wish on his part 10 ■insure over the value, it being only evil disposed peisons that would, do so; therefore s-tdot enquiry should be made as to value before any risk is tuken. An honest pen-on insures merely to. protect himself from total l.ps m case of accident, and if all insured with this object what a difference there would be in the number ot fiVe* that occur. Every me»ns ought to be taken to protect honesl insurers, from suffering by the acts of dishonest ones. A great deal more might be Eaid upon this subject, aud I hope this wil cnuse honest persons to take the matter ur. •wairaly with a view to induce the Insurance Companies, to remedy the evil. There is nc doubt it is a fact that many.;sub-agents a I least take no. trouble whatever to ascertain the value of the risk they me asked to take, but accept, for any amount they are asked simply fopthe sake of the commission. Yours, iSrc, Honesty. To the Editor of the Colonist. Sib,—Permit me through the medium ol your valuable paper to pass a few remarks upon Spiritualism. Now, sir, lam not goin;: to deny that sush a thing exists, for I fine many passages in the Bible (which is God's own Word to man) referring to it, but in everj case I find that the power is attributed tc Satanic agency. True we read of the appear■ ance of angels w Tith messages to rrau, bui they appeared in reality and then disappeared forever ; and we read of even children being possessed with evil spirits, but never witl the spirits of the departed. I wish to appeal not to such men 'as Mr W. C. Nation, whe from his yonth has professed to believe the Bible, but in practice is only denying it, anc really fulfilling it in such passages as'"Now the spirit speaketh expressly that in the lattei times" some .shall depart from the faith, giv ing heed to seducing spirits and doctrines o devils." —I. Tim., iv, 1; and again, " Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse deceiving and being deceived." —11. Tim. iii, 13 ; but I appeal to the honest thinking to the God-fearing, and to the rulers of oui country to take the matter into consideratior whether we ought not to rise and endeavoi to stamp out this flame of spiritualism, whicl is threatening to consume peace out of man] a happy home, and bring our fellow being! to a lower level than heathen superstitioi and darkness. -¥ours, &c., Thiskek.
