THE COLONIST. PUBLISHED DAILY NELSON, MONDAY, MARCH 31, 1884. DEATH OF H.R.H. THE DUKE OF ALBANY.
On Saturday afternoon we received a j cablegram announcing the death of j Prince Leopold, the youngest son of1 her Majesty the Queen, and which occurred suddenly on Friday last, at Cannes. Prince Leopold, who was created a peer with the title of Duke of Albany some three years ago, was born at Buckingham Palace on the sth April, 1853, and was thus within a few days of having attained his 81st year. The Prince was educated at Oxford, and received the degree of D.C.L. in 1876. On reaching his majority he was voted by Parliament a grant of £15,000 a year, with an increase to £25,000 on his marriage, which took place at Windsor in April, 1882. The marriage of his royal Highness with the Princess Frederica Augusta, daughter of H.S.H., the Prince of "Waldeck and Pyrmont, is still fresh in the memories of most people, and there is issue of this marriage one '""irghter—Alice May Victoria Augusta Pauline, born on the 25th February 1883. The deceased Prince had always been of delicate health, and but for this fact he would doubtless have taken a high position amongst men of science and thought. He was of a very studious nature, and when he did speak in public his utterances were marked for their good sense and scholarly nature. Eeference was made to the untimely j death of his Royal Highness in several of our churches yesterday, and at All faints' the " Dead March " was performed at each service.
