CITY COUNCIL. .

Last night, a meeting of the Public Works Committee of the City Council was held for the purpose of receiving tenders for the thirteen distinct contracts for metalling streets; which, at the last meeting of the Council, it was resolved to leave in the hands of this Committee, that they might invite tenders and accept such as they thought were reasonable. His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Graham, Little, and Moorhouse were preserit, and a number of lenders having been opened, it was considered that none of the tenders sent in for contracts numbered 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 were eligible, and it was agreed to recommend the Council to invite fresh tenders, allowing a longer period for their completion. Contracts njinbers 2 and 3, for metalling with Brook street metal Trafalgar street from Hardy street to the Church Hill, and Bridge street from Trafalgar street to Messrs Cock and Co's warehouse, were both let to Mr Newport at 7s per yard. Contract No 9, for metalling Hampden street from Waimea road to Kawai street with river gravel, was let to Mr W. Taylor at £4 10s a chain; No. 11 for metalling l Jarere street with river gravel, and No. 12 for metalling Washington Valley with river gravel, were both let to Mr. Orsmanj the former at £1 15s per chain and: the latter at £1 17s 6d per chain. Contract No; 13, for metalling the footpath, in Trafalgar street south was let to Mr W. Taylor at 20s ptr chain. The estimated cost ,of the whole thirteen contracts between £700and£800
