HOW COLONEL WHITMORE TREATS SPIES.

On Saturday la?t (says the Wanganui Times of Dee. 5) —exactly a week ago —we published an extraordinary If-ttpr from Colonel Whitmore in which he said: —" Two spies more or less trustworthy have been brought in, who report, that Tito Kowaru's whole force is at Papiitspu. Five of his peoplo were nearly caught by our cavalry, who chased them the o'her day, when Mr. Hundley's house was burned, and this ha* alarmed them sufficiently to compel them to keep together." We were anxious to know what had been clone with those spies, and have been informed by one of the Kai Iwi Cavalry who happened to be present, that Colonel Whibmore showed them over the camp, and took them to the redoubt which they inspected most minutely, One of them put bis hand upon the wall, which was built of fern and earth only about breast, high, shook it; looted up to tho scarp of the opposite hil!; then accompanied Colonel Whitraore to his tent, received a liberal supply of tobacco, &c, an:l departed. That was on Friday the 27th. On the night of Saturday the 28th, a breastwork was thrown up on the scarp of the hill which the spy had eyed from the redoubt, and at daylight on Sunday the 29th the enemy opened fire from that spot upon our men in the redoubt. Fortunately the spy had miscalculated the actual distance and so tho firing which was kept up at intervals throughout that day did no harm. Truly the Hauhaus must despise ua as arrant cowards or simpletons. How would Tito Kowaru treat a spy if caught in his camp ?
