WAIMEA.
Tbe escort left here last Tuesday, carrying down 4500 ounces. This amount was sent down by two of the banks ; tho. third, for some unexplained reason, retaining their gold. The fine weather we have enjoyed for the last few weeks has been of material advantage to the miners here, and work is progressing steadily. Gold still continues to be obtained in considerable quantities, particularly in the back gullies and on the terraces, a great many of which are turning out handsomely remunerative. During the past week a party of three men brought in 500 ounces from MaorlGully, the result of ten weeks' work. A
party of men, working about a mile from here, informed me that during the six months they have held their claim they have worked 88 days, and have averaged 30s. per day a man, wet and dry. This is not a solitary instance, I know of many such.
Captain Jabvet's trial for the murder of his wife was to commence anew at Dunedin on Monday last.
