Nelson College.—We draw attention to an advertisement in another column announcing the date of the commencement of the next session of the Nelson College. It cannot be too widely known that this educational institute is incomparably the best in the colony. Beautifully situated in the most healthy part of the colony, and constructed with the view of affording the utmost comfort and convenience to the students, it is not too much to lay that few. if any, institutions of the same character in England can surpass the Nelson College in the completeness of their arrangements. When it is borne in mind that pupils are placed under the tuition of talented masters in the several branches of education, and are comfortably boarded and lodged for £50 per annum, it cannot be doubted that the Nelson College offers educational facilities of a very superior character. Drowning.—lntelligence reached town that Mr. Fox, discoverer of Fox's rush, Wm. Meloody, and three or four others, were crossing Lake Wakatip in a small boat, when a squall came on, the boat was capsized, and all hands were drowned. This was since confirmed by a miner from the lake.

The two cutton, comprising the leading expedition fitted out by our spirited townsman, Mr J. G. Hughes, arrived here pa the 22nd Jan., from the West Coast via Stewart's Island. We regret to report that the result of this expedition is not so satisfactory as was anticipated; the boats were not able to reach farther north than Dusky Bay, owing to the tremendous gales of wind, accompanied by heavy rain, experienced more or less since leaving this, thus en* tirely precluding the possibility of carrying out the object of the undertaking. The heavy weather consequent to the West Coast requiring vessels of not less than 70 tons to make the voyage with convenience and safety. We hope, ere long, to see a stout steamer engaged fn the service of an exploration of the coast line between Preservation Inlet and the Buller River, as the time has now arrived when the question * whether the country of the West Coast it available for settlement, as for the development of the various rich fields of metala and minerals generally sapposed to exist there, awaiting the presence and ingenuity of men to develope them should t» at onoa «UleA~£MM4r^
