THE GOVERNMENT PRIZES.

The shooting of the City Company (postponed from last week) took place yesterday, at the usual practice ground. Tlie day was a favorable one lacking sunshine, but being-fine and still; and a larger single score was obtained than on any preceding occasion, W. H. West having obtained 30 nfiinto. Bells.—We call attention to the meeting advertised to take place at tlie Court House this evening, at which the members of the provisional committee before mentioned are expected to attend and when some definite proposition as to how the end may be attained, will most probably be placed before the meeting. Band of Hope.—A very interesting lecture, in connection with this society, was delivered in the Temperance Hall by Mr. I. M. Hill, the subject being ' Malt Liquors.' A bottle of Nelson ale was analysed, and several other illustrative experiments made.

CRICKET AT WAKEFIELD. [from a correspondent.] Sir—l feel great pleasure in commuicating the result of the return game of cricket between Wakefield and Wakatu; and previous to any comment I think it will be better to give tho score, so that an impartial decision may be arrived at. Fair play ia fair play, and I shall confine myself strictly to the game on what few remarks will be mado.

A proposition was made by the umpire of the Wakatu club, that in the event of the game not being decided that day, the first innings should decide it: this was objected to, and it was finally agreed to between the umpires that half-past five was to be the time for the wickets to be withdrawn. Accordingly, at that time, the umpire of the Wakatu withdrew his stumps, with three wickets down (three of their best batters), and 76 runs to win.

Thus remained the state of the game at sunset, and at which time the greater portion of the Nelson players left the ground, and did not remain to dine with tho party. In the evening one of the Nelson players, in his usual gentlemanly style, handed over a new ball to the Wakefield party, for which the match was played, and gave them the match. This of course decided the bets that might have been made, agreeably to the articles of cricket.

The bowling of the Wakatu clubs was not so good as they are generally noted for, but their fielding was good, and with the fielding I may join the Wakefield, whose bowling was very fair, considering they were only young hands ; but let another season revolve with plenty of club practice, and I have not the slightest hesitation in saying Wakefield will have a fair chance of meeting any colonial eleven.

The friends at tho dinner, which ought to have consisted of both parties, only boasted of five players of the Wakatu's; but these, with the visitors, sat down to a jolly good fare (allow me to say a feast), such a fare that does the landlord of the Forest Inn great credit.

Mr. Hunt appeared on the ground with his brass band, and played a few pieces between the innings; but having the dinner at his own house, could not prolong his stay, but made up for it ia thq vening.
