KAWHIA LOSE TO RAGLAN WIN FOR BASKETBALL TEAM Kawhia District High School played the Raglan District High School at Rugby and Basketball on the Domain last Saturday. The Kawhia teams were as follows: Basketball.—Forwards: J. O’Connor, R. Reti, H. Roke; centres: L. Adams', G. Par, C. Paki; defence: C. Reti (capt.), J. Humphrey, M. Paki. Rugby.—Forwards: G. In the basketball the teams were evenly matched and both played good games. The score was 3-5 in Kawhia’s favour .at half time. The Kawhia centres did not have as good a day as they had at Raglan but the defence played an excellent game. One of the best players was O’Connor who gained most of the goals. The game finished with the score 9-11 in Kawhia’s favour. Mrs Lentfer refereed the match. Rugby Playing with great dash in the forkwards, Kawhia held the much heavier Raglan team for three-quarters of the game. With quarter of an hour to go Kawhia were one point in the lead, but lack of match practice and the weight of the Raglan pack were beginning to tell. The final score was Raglan 17, Kawhia 12. Kawhia’s first points came from a penalty goal by W. Ormsby who a little later goaled again with a beautiful forty yard kick. K. Meredith was very unlucky in not scoring, when securing from the back of the lineout, he raced between the posts but just failed to ground the ball. However, Kawhia scored a few minutes later when after all the backs had drawn their men, Lindsay flashed up into the back line to score wide out. The conversion missed. A scrum was ordered five yards from the Raglan line. W. Ormsby gathered and raced for the blind side to touch down well out. The flanker, A. Hale, kept the Raglan inside backs very quiet. The tackling of R. Lentfer was grand to watch. Lindsay at fullback kicked and tackled well while his try was excellent. He will, however, have to watch his positional play. The whole team is to be congratulated on the grand showing they made. Mr T. Humphrey controlled the game.
