ACCESS TO TAHAROA

NATIVE LAND COURT TO SIT SPECIAL CONFERENCE AT KAWHIA The Hon. W. J. Broadfoot, M.P., has received the following letter from the Minister of Works, the Hon. W. S. Goosman:— “Some time ago you referred to me an inquiry as to the possibility of opening up the Taharoa track. I have had the matter investigated, and I am informed that the Ministry of Works is unable to make any funds available for the purpose, nor, unfortunately, is the Kawhia County Council prepared to act. “There seems to be no doubt that proper access is greatly needed in this area, but proposals for a legal road have been held up on several occasions owing to strenuous opposition from some of the Maori owners. “Arrangements have been made, however, for the plans of the proposed road to be brought before the Maori Land Court again at Kawhia, at a special meeting to be arranged as sono as possible. At this sitting the opportunity will be taken to discuss the general question of road access in the Taharoa district, and I am hopeful that it will be possible to find a solution to this long-stand-ing matter.”
