MAORI ELECTIONS
GOVERNMENT RETAINS THE FOUR SEATS HIGH HONOUR FOR MRS RATANA Labour has retained all four Maori seats in the House of Representatives. The election in these constituencies yesterday gave decisive victories to Mr T. Paikea (Northern Maori), Mr T. Omana (Eastern Maori), Mrs I. M. Ratana (Western Maori, formerly held by her .ate husband) and the Hon. E. T. Tirikatene (Southern Maori). The results were as follows, candidates’ affiliations being shown as (L) Labour, (N) National, (K) Kauhanganui, (I) Independent, (Ind Lab) Independent Labour, (Dem Lab) Democratic Labour. The voting at the Te Awamutu booth in the Court House proceeded steadily through the day. Mrs Ratana received 38 votes and Mr Marumaru 31 votes. The other seven candidates polled only a negligible number of votes among them. The deputy returning officer was Mr J. Corboy and his associate was. Mr Raureti Te Huia.
