TROTTING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD PRESIDENT’S REPORT The second annual meeting of the Te Awamutu Trotting Club was held in the Borough Council chambers, on Tuesday night, when the president Mr S. H. Wanklyn presided. President’s Report It is with pleasure that I present for your consideration the accounts for the second year of the club’s existence. The year just closed has resulted in the satisfactory addition of £3lB 15s 4d to our accumulated funds, which now stand at £690 17s 9d. This is most gratifying and indicates that as soon as a totalisator permit is available to the club we will be in a position to put on a programme which will prove attractive to owners and trainers and patrons of the sport alike. I had hoped that by now we would have staged our first totalisator meeting, but so far the Gaming Bill has not been brought before Parliament though it would appear that it will be given consideration in the very near future. All information available to. your committee, seems to indicate beyond all doubt that, in the event of additional totalisator permits being granted, our club can confidently anticipate being allocated at least one permit. Members will note with satisfaction that the Matinee Meeting held on 4th September, 1948—thanks to the cooperation of the Waipa Racing Club and the very generous support of the Auckland Trotting Club—was an outstanding success, both financially and as a sporting fixture. On 9th July last, at the Te Awamutu Light Horse Association’s picnic meeting, we put on two trotting events which were well patronised by trotting owners and trainers and were quite a feature of the day’s sport. No election will be necessary for the committee this year as the only nominations received were those of the retiring members, Messrs A. F. Candy, H. Maxwell, J. Quigley, A. D. Wallace and S. H. Wanklyn. I would like to record my sincere appreciation of the continued assistance of the officials of the Waipa Racing Club, and also of the solid support of the members of my committee, who have been untiring in their efforts to further the interests of the light harness sport in this district. I also gratefully acknowledge the assistance of all who have given their services to the club, and would express our appreciation of the efficient manner in which Mr Johnston has handled his duties as secretary of the club Mr Wanklyn supplemented the report by making special reference to the success of Single Direct in winning the Australian championship, and he congratulated the owners Mrs E. M. Elliott and Mr Bruce Elliot on the success. Mr Wanklyn said that not only was that outstanding achievment an honour to Mr and Mrs Elliott and Single Direct’s trainer, Mr E. N. Kennerly, but it reflected credit on the local facilities available for training purposes. Mr Wanklyn also paid a high tribute to the services of Mr S. S. Preston.

Mr T. Grant complimented the committee on the club’s sound position and he also commended them on building up a financial fund. The report was then adopted.

As the number of nominations for the committee did not* exceed the-re-quired number, no election was necessary.

The meeting closed after a brief discussion of matters dealing with the working of the club.
