Constable E. Costello, of the Te Awamutu Police, is relieving at Matamata for approximately a fortnight. Mr B. L. Dallard, Under-Secretary of Justice and Controller-General of Prisons, retires to-day after 42 years’ service? in the Public Service. The Rev. H. C. Orchard and Mrs Orchard are at present in Te Awa-. mutu renewing old friendships made when Mr Orchard was the Minister in charge of the local Methodist Church. They are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Johnson. Mr and Mrs Orchard have recently returned from a visit to Australia, and they expect to leave for the South to-morrow evening.

Mr Raymond Quick, son of Mr and Mrs T. P. Quick, of Totara Street, Te Awamutu, left Auckland by air yesterday for Cambridge near Boston in the United States, where he will enter the Massachusetts University of Technology where he will further his studies. Mr Quick travelled by British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines, leaving Whenuapai at 3 p.m., being farewelled by his parents. Mr Quick expects to arrive in San Francisco at 9.40 a.m. to-morrow and will travel from the latter to his destination by one of the luxury land liners commonly known as “Greyhounds.” Mr Quick carries with him the best wishes of a large number of friends for his success in his chosen studies.
