Floral Fete The Borough -Council on Monday night granted the Beautifying Society’s application for the use of Victoria Park for the annual floral fete. Kerbside Pump An application from a garage proprietor in Sloane Street for permission to have a bowser pump was before the Borough Council on Monday night. The application was referred to the Works Committee. The Cenotaph

Bicycles Thrown on Footpaths The Mayor (Mr G. Spinley) at Monday night’s meeting if the Borough Council referred to what he termed the very nasty habit of children throwing their bicycles on the footpaths to the annoyance and obstruction of userj of the footpaths. Complaints had been received and they were justified. On the motion of Crs Williams and Chunn it was decided to write to the headmasters of the schools asking them to draw the attention of pupil.; to the undesirability of such a practice.

Town Planner For Hamilton The position of town planning officer is to be offered to Mr L. G. Westwood, of Hamilton, as a result of the Hamilton City Council’s adopting a recommendation by the staff committee. Mr Westwood was formerly engaged in surveying at Hawera. He joined the British colonial service in 1939 and was stationed in West Africa. Before the war he did a course of town planning in England. During the war he was in Gold Coast, Abyssinia and .North Africa. On his return to New Zealand he was surveying at Mangakino for a period and he has been in Hamilton for the past year.

Scarcity of Water Piping The inability of farmers to procure water piping was stressed by Mr W» J. Broadfoot, speaking in the House of Representatives. Dairy farmers in the Waitomo electorate milked big herds, stated Mr Broadfoot, and many of them were in difficulties through being unable to secure sufficient water for stock. One farmer at Otorohanga put down bore after bore but could not get pure water. The water he got was heavily impregnated with iron, and within three months the pipes used were clogged. It had been found impossible to get water piping.

Transit Housing “The Committee inspected the Transit Camp, Mangahoe Street with Inspectors Russell and Jenner of the Department of Health. It was decided to refer the department’s requests regarding the improvement of drainagte and sanitary conveniences at the camp to the Transit Housing Committee for a report.” The above recommendation of the Works Committee was adopted by the Borough Council on Monday night. Sunday Game of Football Cr Williams at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council raised the question of the Works Committee granting permission for a footbail match played at Albert Park on Sunday and asked whether such permission was granted subject to the game being played outside church hours. The Mayor said that the promoters of the game which was a benefit one advertised it before consulting the council. Permission had not been really granted or otherwise, but they were told that it could not be played on No. 1 ground. It was not an organised game otherwise he (the Mayor) said he did not think it would be allowed. Field Day and Demonstrations A Field Day, organised by the Waipa District Committee of the Young Farmers’ Clubs in conjunction with the Extension Division of the Department of Agriculture, is to be held on the property of Mr P. Ray, about five miles south of T? Awamutu on Friday, September 16th. The day will be one of the biggest that has been held in the Auckland Province and the largest to be held in the Waikato. There will be demonstrations of many and varied types of farm implements and other adjuncts of use to the farmer and of interest to see in action. The Te Awamutu Borough Codncjl was advised on Monday night that the Main Highways Board had approved of £642 being made available for a footpath on the HamiltonTe Kuiti State Highway (Kihikihi Road).
