SPENCE CUP CONTESTS! KEEN INTERESTING GAMES A large number of local bowlers assembled at the Kawhia greens on Sunday when the annual contest for the Spence Cup was held. Partners were drawn as follows: R. Nesbit and F. Bush, T. O’Connor and B. Daysh, L. Spence and J. Manawaiti, J. O’Connor and A. Goodwin, W. Davies and K. Peat, S'. Sifleet and H. Daysh, M. Oldbury and C. E.

W/est, I. Davies and H. Strough. First Round: T. O’ Connor beat R. Nesbit, 19—2; L. Spence beat J. O’Connor, 18—10; W. Davies beat S. Sifleet, 13—42; I. Davies beat M. Oldbury, 19—-9. Second Round: Sifleet beat Nesbit, 18—15, Oldbury beat T. O’Connor, 13—<9; I. Davies beat Spence, 14—AS; J. O’ Connor beat W. Davies, 18—J6. In this round Davies and Spence were all square, 13—13, and the extra head went to Davies. J. O’ConnorDavies being all square at 16, played an extra head, resulting in another 2 for O’Connor. Third Round: Nesbit beat Oldbury, 18—8; T. O’Connor beat I. Davies, 23—5; Spence beat W. Davies, 18—9; Sifleet beat J. O’Connor, 19—43. Fourth Round: Nesbit beat Davies, 17—*16; Spence beat Sifleet, 16—6; T. O’Connor beat W. Davies. 13—(12; J. O’Connor beat Molloy, 16—14. Summary of Play T. O’Connor 3 wins, L. Spence 3 wins, Nesbit 2 wins, J. O’Connor 2 wins. S. Sifleet 2 vans, I. Davies 2 wins, M. Oldbury 1 win, W. Davies 1 win. The play-off of five heads resulted in a win for L. Sepnce and J. Manawaiti from T. O’Connor and B. Daysh, 6—4. M>’ M. Oldbury presented the cups to the winners. Gold Buttons The gold button was held by last year’s winner, Mr Ivan Davies. As Mr Davies was not a member for the start of the 1948-49 season the first and second challengers, Mlessrs T. O’Connor and M. Oldbury, played off the competition, the result being in favour of M. Oldbury, 18—8. The third challenger, L. Spence, was successful in beating M. Oldbury in a very interesting and tight game, which ended 16—15. In the next challenger, B. Daysh beat L. Spence, 13—-11, after an interesting game in which L. Spence held the upper hand in the early part of the game. Spence then drifted, and Daysh went into the lead, 13—ft, with three heads to go. Spence then made up his ground and just failed on the last head, leaving Daysh the winner as stated. W‘. Lentfer is the next challenger. Visit to Raglan Several members will attend the Raglan tournament on Saturday next (12th February). General Notes on the Play (By “Kitty”) K. Peat, the baby member, in his second day’s play, drawing the shot consistently for Skip W. Davies. Swing bowler H. Strough—another novice playing like an old-timer. M. Oldbury painting beautiful pictures around the jack, and L. Spence consistently destroying the scene. F. Bush—another novice with good intentions and a ready and willingworker towards club improvements. Rain fell during the second game of the pairs tournament and made conditions tricky for the players. Mesdames L. Spence and R. Nesbit were seen attending to the wants of the inner, man at the club-house. They are a tower of strength to the Club. I. Davies has just rejoined the Club and plays with all his last season’s skill. A good player in the making. Life member J. O’Connor playing fair bowls—no luck with him at all. Green-keeper Steve Sifleet playing good bowls, but the fifth man deserts him on tournament days. Ted West looking' for a free-air station after the third game of a fivegame day.
